Orthodontics - Aligning Teeth

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT AND BRACES
Orthodontics is a dental speciality that studies, prevents and corrects alterations in development, the shape of the dental arches and the position of the jaws, in order to re-establish the morphological and functional balance of the mouth and face, also improving facial aesthetics.
ORTHODONTICS
AND BRACES, A HEALTH SPECIALITY
The preoccupation with straightening teeth sometimes
makes the public forget the importance of the
biological foundations and functional objectives of
orthodontics, and of its nature and health
framework.
ORTHODONTICS, MORE THAN JUST MOVING
TEETH
Orthodontics tackles problems that go far
beyond the individual and detailed positioning of
teeth, and instead deals with the correction of
alterations of the jaws, the face and, above all,
the functional disorders of mastication.
THE AGE TO
START AN ORTODONTIC TREATMENT
The appropriate age for treating
malocclusions varies according to the type of
problem and its severity. It is therefore advisable
to consult an orthodontist as soon as an anomaly is
discovered. In any case, we recommend that, whether
or not a problem is detected, children should be
taken for a check-up by the orthodontist at least at
the age of six.
Orthodontic treatment is usually
associated with adolescence, but, as we will see
later, even if treatment is not started at an early
age, it is nevertheless important to carry out a
check-up to ensure the best dental health for your
children.
Orthodontics is a more complex health
specialty than it may at first appear. Make sure
that only those who are properly trained and,
therefore, able to deal with the intricate
diagnostic and therapeutic problems, take charge of
the case so that the treatment can yield optimal
results.
NORMALITY
Let us remember, then, that
what is normal should not be confused with what is
ideal or desired! Orthodontics treats, redirects,
accommodates and directs each patient towards their
own goal, bringing them back into line with their
pattern of growth and development, adjusting their
teeth and jaws within the framework of their own
normality. Normality, of course, requires certain
reference parameters!
Orthodontic treatment aims
to achieve the normality of each patient. Normality
is what is regular, what is frequent. The ideal, on
the other hand, is what we consider to be perfect.
When the anatomical components are within the norms
that are considered acceptable, a system is
configured which, from an orthodontic point of view,
without being ideal, is within a functional and
aesthetic balance.
Defining beauty is very
difficult. However, an attractive face always fits
within harmonious proportions, with the personal and
racial variations of each individual, where
measurements play an important role, but let's
remember: only as reference values!
There is a
relationship between the position of the teeth and
the rest of the jaw and face. That is why it is
essential to know how they normally fit together, as
the orthodontist's goal is the harmonious assembly
of all of them. What the orthodontist does is to
shape the relationship between teeth and jaws. The
very nature of each patient is what will later add
the compensatory adjustments to each case, in
accordance with the patient's own facial type, all
within the framework of personalised individuality.
The orthodontist duly interprets and therefore
advises and decides on the variability of the norm,
as he/she receives additional training for this
purpose.
MIXED DENTISTRY is the dental period
between the ages of 6 and 12 years in which the
primary teeth are gradually replaced by the
permanent teeth. During this phase the primary and
permanent teeth will be together.
